Bowen, Brandenburg to be honored on May 9 in Grand Marais

On Friday, May 9, 2008, the ARAC will present the 10th Annual Arrowhead Arts Awards in a short ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Betsy Bowen Studio, 301 1st Avenue West in Grand Marais, MN. The awards ceremony will be part of the Jazz Art Underground Sneak Preview and will feature live music by Jazz Pianist Chris Gillis.

This year's recipient of the Maddie Simons Advocate Award is Betsy Bowen in recognition of her contribution to the arts as an arts advocate, a printmaker, a writer, illustrator, musician, puppeteer, set designer, pageant director, proprietor of Good Harbor Hill Press, founding member of the Good Harbor Hill Players, and active supporter of artists and the arts in Grand Marais and beyond. This year’s recipient of the George Morrison Artist Award is renowned photographer Jim Brandenburg of Ely, MN. Brandenburg took his first photograph at age fourteen and then further developed his photographic skills and style while majoring in art at the University of Minnesota. Since college, Brandenburg has traveled as a photographer with National Geographic Magazine for several decades and has work published in numerous national and international publications including The New York Times, Life, Time, Audubon, Smithsonian, Natural History, Outdoor Photographer, National Wildlife and Outside.

The ARAC encourages our constituents to attend this ceremony honoring these individuals.

Minnesota State Arts Board grants information session May 14

ARAC will host a free workshop presented by the MSAB, Wednesday May 14, 6-8 pm at the Marshall School Annex (Common Room) in Duluth. Individual artists who would like to learn about grant opportunities offered by the Minnesota State Arts Board and their regional arts councils, are invited to attend.  Twelve sessions will be held throughout the state; artists may attend any session. More information is available from the Minnesota State Arts Board website.

Artists can also schedule a one-on-one appointment with an Arts Board program officer, on the morning after each session.  During the appointment the program officer can answer specific questions about Arts Board grant opportunities, and offer advice on how to apply for a grant. To register for an information session, and/or to schedule a one-on-one appointment with a program officer, call the Arts Board at (651) 215-1600 or (800) 866-2787.

Vote YES Insider's Meetings to be held in Arrowhead Region

As someone who cares about conservation and the arts in Minnesota, you are invited to one of three special insider's meetings being organized by Minnesota Citizens for the Arts, the Vote Yes Minnesota campaign, Don Hammer at the Grand Marais Art Colony, David Marty at the Reif Center in Grand Rapids and Barb Darland at the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra.

A campaign is about to be launched to pass the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment. On November 4, Minnesotans will have a once in a lifetime chance to secure dedicated funding for clean water, land conservation and the arts with a constitutional amendment. You want to know what's going on, and we want to fill you in on plans for the Vote Yes Minnesota campaign, recent (very encouraging!) confidential polling results, and a discussion of how we will spread the word in the arts and conservation communities.

So, please join us at one of these three meetings:

1. Grand Marais Art Colony, 120 West Third Ave., Grand Marais, 6:00-7:30 p.m., Friday, May 16
2. Duluth Blackwoods Grill and Bar, 2525 London Rd., 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 21st
3. Reif Center, 720 Conifer Drive, Grand Rapids, 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 21st

Please RSVP to Vote Yes at 651-644-2088 x18 or to donna@yesformn.org. We look forward to seeing you there!
