Creative Writing: Funny Stuff
July 9, 2025
6-8 p.m.
A frequent criticism of “serious” literature is that it is often humorless, with a narrow emotional range that begins with ennui and ends in despair. If you want to write with a broad emotional range, this session is for you. We'll read story excerpts that ably mix comedy with heartbreak, and absurdity with terror, as we work towards convincingly adding humor to our own writing.

You'll also want to consider reliability, objectivity, distance, and audience. We'll review the different types of POVs and their variations, and exercises will let you experiment with different forms to learn which one is the best POV for your novel or short story.

Creative Writing: Novel Subplots
November 19, 2025

Wild Birds and Berries

On View: May 1–31, 2025

Fiber artist Natalija Walbridge captures the quiet beauty of northern Minnesota from her studio on Park Point. Inspired by local wildlife and their habitats, she creates layered fabric collages that, from afar, resemble paintings—but up close, reveal intricate textures, delicate stitching, and thoughtfully chosen fabric colors.

Her series Wild Birds and Berries blends realism with abstraction, encouraging viewers to pause, look closer, and reconnect with the rhythms of the natural world.

Bonus: Scan the QR code in the gallery for recipes inspired by the wild berries featured in the artwork!

Fiction Writing Workshop with Claire Bransky

Wait seriously, what's the world you want to live in?

A workshop using fiction as a tool for visioning & organizing

WHERE: The Loch Café & Games, 318 N 18th Ave E, Duluth, MN 55812
WHEN: Thursday, April 10, 6-8 PM
WHO: Anyone is welcome!
PREP: Please bring a notebook and something to write with!

In these times of crisis, fear, and hopelessness, it can be easy to imagine what we DON'T want. But what DO we want? What is the world that we long for? How does it look, feel, and function? How could we get there?

For the past six months, local organizer Claire Bransky has been grappling with these questions through a short story about their Duluth neighborhood in the year 2125. Claire will share a draft of their story for community feedback, and facilitate an interactive workshop experimenting with fiction as a tool to imagine beyond the constraints we've been taught. We will also reflect on why those constraints exist, who benefits from them, and how it feels to break beyond. Space is limited, please RSVP at bit.ly/fictionforthefuture.

“We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings.” --Ursula K. LeGuin
